NCYC Students return to Saint John’s campus!

NCYC (National Catholic Youth Choir) has recently returned to campus for their two week summer program. I and a sister from the Monastic Community of Saint Benedict in Saint Joseph, joined the high school aged students for lunch and then spoke about vocations and answered questions. This was an exceptionally gifted group of young people that were a joy to spend time talking about God’s call in our life!

Above is a picture of the larger portion of the group.

The first picture is the calm, well-behaved “look” and the second gives way to the kind of energy this group has at their disposal!

For the next six days the choir will be touring the upper midwest sharing their music.
God’s blessings upon them! Peace, bpv

Saint Mary’s School, Melrose, MN!

I had the pleasure of hosting about 30 students from Saint Mary’s Catholic School in Melrose, Minnesota this morning. We toured the Great Hall and the Abbey Church. They went on to enjoy a presentation of the Saint John’s Bible and after lunch on campus will be doing a tour of the Arboretum.

Below are two pictures of the group. The first is “on our best behaviour” picture and the second is a response to my reminder that today is their last day of school!

Congratulations to the teachers and administration of Saint Mary’s School as well as the children’s parents for some well mannered and exceptionally attentive and bright young scholars!

Fr. Nickolas in Japan…

It is not unusual for the monastery to send Junior monks off to one of our dependant priories simply to broaden their appreciation one of our most foreign apostolates. In this case Fr. Nickolas Becker, OSB who has just been accepted for final vows is visiting our community in Fujimi, Japan. Here he is being greeted by monks Tada San, OSB on the far left and Simose San, OSB on the far right.

We trust Fr. Nickolas will have an excellent time appreciating the wonderful Japanese Benedictine hospitality!

Two old friends are leaving…

Tree experts have determined that the two large Silver Maple trees located between the Abbey Church and the Great Hall have deteriorated to the point of being dangerously weak. Should a strong wind come up they could easily come down. The monastic chapter voted to have them removed. The plaza between the Great Hall and the Church are being renovated this summer and so a new design for trees and green space is being incorporated. Still…we will miss them!

Certainly the other tree will be gone by the end of tomorrow.

Welcome to Saint Andrew’s School from Elk River, MN!

Given the approaching end of the school year we have had a number of Abbey Church tour student groups. Today students and teachers from Saint Andrew’s School of Elk River, MN came to visit the campus and I had the pleasure of showing them the baptismal font, the nave, the monastic prayer stalls, the Mabon Madonna and the reliquary in the lower level of the church. These wonderfully bring and inquisitive young Christians were a real pleasure to show around. Congratulations to their teachers and their families!

Above is the group of students on their best behavior!

Above is the picture of the students after they were told that they would be only 8 days of school left this semester! (Just kidding!)

Blessings on these young men and women as well as their teachers and chaparrones! Peace, bpv

New Benedictine Volunteers!

With the University graduation yesterday came a new crop of Benedictine Volunteers. Below is a picture of the majority of this year’s group. All are from Saint John’s University and have just graduated in a variety of disciplines. The entire class will be divided into two groups that will each spend two weeks living, dining, praying studying, working and recreating in the monastery getting used to the culture of Benedictine monasticism before they ship off to their assigned locations. To read more about the Benedictine Volunteer Corps and their work go to http://www.sjbvc.org/file/Home.html

Blessings on these young men who will be helping to build the Kingdom of God on earth in 11 locations throughout the world!

“Transcendence” by Veronica Popescu

Not for three moths, let alone nine

could Mary conceal His presence-

Nor was Joseph kept in the dark

before His eruption like the morning star

at midnight breaking in winter-

He dazzled both shepherds and wise men:

We twelve were all blinded-three years-

till flesh failed to veil Him, even from us,

in a calm stilled sea, and on one mountain top.

How then could we conspire to cover Him

with heavy human robes- bury Him

in puny feudal powers?  Him

whose setting the sun mourned,

whose light death could not extinguish?

He burst out of that grave, propelled

by resurrection- casting us all before Him

by the blaze of his uprising.

LosAngeles Congress

Every year about 35,000 Catholics show up at the Anaheim Convention Center in Orange County, California. The Liturgical Press, The Saint John’s School of Theology/Seminary, Little Rock Scripture Study and Saint John’s Abbey Vocations all join the many other Catholic organizations that take part in the convention hall. Below is a picture of the School of Theology-Seminary which was right next door to Abbey Vocations. The work is wonderful – meeting so many people but at the same time being on your feet from 8 am until 5 pm can be exhausting as well! I was able to pass out some 3000 + magnets one by one to interested people!

Cathedral – John the XXIII vocation visit…

I had an excellent time with some 40 8th (almost 9th!) graders at John the XXIII middle school in Saint Cloud this morning. We explored the idea of vocation – what it means and maybe what it doesn’t mean! This group of men were very sharp and just a lot of fun to be with. Congratulations to their instructor and the school community!

Can you find the monk? Peace, bpv
